Frequently Asked Question

What does ElephantVoices only support Protected Contact (PC) in elephant training management?

When the elephant handler or keeper and the elephant do not share the same unrestricted space while working together we call it Protected Contact, PC. The keeper is in this management regime separated from the elephant with a safe barrier. Through positive reinforcement the elephant may chose to stay where the keeper or veterinarian want him/her to, but the elephant can also chose to stay away. No force is in this way used in treatment, training or other contact through the barrier, the elephant's will and autonomy is intact.

When keepers are dealing with elephants within the same space it is called Free Contact. We strongly oppose a management regime that allow Free Contact, which is not natural for any elephant. Free Contact can be dangerous for both keeper and elephant, and such a management policy can also easily be compromised and/or abused.
